I have a problem getting DCP and SQL to work. When I try to use the SQL processor, I get an error saying that the request was successfull, but it could not find the document entity to place the results in. Am I missing some package, and it's truly not working properly? I guess what I'm really asking is whether JDK-1.2.2 contains the jdbc implementation, or if I have to do another download. When I try to follow the instructions/tutorial on DCP, cocoon cannot find the object. I placed the java class file in the list of classpath.wrappers in the jserv.conf file. The instructions were not explicitly clear on how exactly to reference the java object, and the link to the real life example is either broken, or the site is down. If there is no additional HTML required for the rowset element simply pass along the ability to process the row element. Since rowset and row are the only child elements at that level, by itself will also suffice, however you may want to leave the selects if you add additional elements to avoid ambiguity. > tkrebs@attglobal.net wrote: > > I am trying to transform the attached XML file with Cocoon into a > simple HTML table presentation with ID and DESCRIPTION as table > header. All I can tell you is that yes it does work. I have got it working with jdbc-odbc driver connecting to an MS Access database. I did eventually get it working -- I was using an incorrect driver. The correct driver name is "sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver". I think I was originally looking at some of the old docs at javasoft.com (as you see in the example I sent, I left off the beginning "sun."). As for the DCP problems, I really feal stupid. Of course, being new to java, it may be an understandable mistake. The documentation never told me to COMPILE the java class. Once I compiled it, the module worked. I put the class in the JServ classpath. One thing that I've noticed, is that the SQL module decides whether it wants to work or not on its own. I finally got everything running with it, and depending on how the startup happens, it doesn't return any information from the database. It just acts like nothing was entered in. The problem starts with using the tag. If I simply hardcode all the options (which makes for a really long line), then it works every time. If I set up a querydef, it only works after one successful query. In other words, if I set up a querydef like this: then the following constuct: SELECT * FROM xyz; will only work after one query like the following: SELECT * FROM xyz; (although the doc-element and row-element are optional, but to work with my schema I need that). Has anyone else run into this problem? It only needs to be run one time like the long version, then every other call using the def works fine. To me, this is a problem because the solution I pitched to my colleagues used XML for the content (so that marketing weenies and staff pukes can put the words in), XSL for the display (so the graphics designer could make it look pretty), and DCP-java for the logic (so the people who make things actually work can do their part). The marketing weenies and staff pukes (affectionate names given by the president of our company) are not going to want to type in the long form every time. I may just keep all queries in the DCP sections, and not take the chance of the staff pukes messing up on that arguably logic oriented set up. All in all, this is an excellent system. My managers were very impressed with the potential of how we could use the system. The performance was acceptable, and the type of hardware we would run it on would make it sing. Granted our load will not be as heavy as a general internet site. Cocoon is a Java Servlet which can process XML files with XSL files (which can transform or change them (for instance, only display the author, book name and price of non fiction books from an xml file of books) and assign display characteristics (book name will use this font, that size, this color, etc.)). It can also be extended with processors, which allow you to make up your own mark up language, like your own flavor of Cold Fusion or something. One processor allows you to put SQL in an XML document saving you from having to write a Servlet or something to handle it. Hope this helped. Running under RedHat Linux 6.1 (kernel 2.2.5-15), I am having problems getting Cocoon to run. I'm pretty sure this is a dumb configuration problem based upon my not-too-deep knowledge of ApacheJServ, so I thought I would just go ahead an ask how to fix it. When I run Cocoon (v1.5), I get the following: [28/12/1999 11:38:06:365] (ERROR) ajp12: Servlet Error: ClassNotFoundException: org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon Okay, so I figure that I'm not finding the servlet in the zone. Here's the appropriate lines in jserv.properties: wrapper.classpath=/usr/local/jserv/libexec/ApacheJServ.jar wrapper.classpath=/usr/local/jsdk2.0/lib/jsdk.jar wrapper.classpath=/usr/local/cocoon/bin/Cocoon.jar wrapper.classpath=/usr/local/cocoon/bin/fop.0110.jar wrapper.classpath=/usr/local/cocoon/bin/openxml.106-fix.jar wrapper.classpath=/usr/local/cocoon/bin/xslp.19991017-fix.jar # wrapper.classpath=/usr/local/cocoon/Cocoon_1.5.jar zones=example example.properties=/tmp/example/example.properties So, AFAICS, the classpath should be okay, and everything is in the example zone. The interessting parts of the example properties zone looks like this: repositories=/usr/local/cocoon/Cocoon_1.5.jar repositories=/tmp/example servlet.org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon=properties=/usr/local/cocoon/bin/cocoon.pro perties Finally, the following is in jserv.conf, which itself is included in httpd.conf: ApJServAction .xml /example/org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon I've looked at this a few different ways, and have tried without success various combinations of things. I'd be happy to send the full configuration files to someone off-list if they could take a look, or better yet, get some tips on how to debug this. Any thoughts? If people want to get me off-list, please do, and I will post a summary of the fixup so nothing important gets lost. Thanks in advance; Richard PS: Other info is ApacheJServ 1.1b3, JSDK2.0, jdk1.2.2 from blackdown... I think that's all the important stuff, but as I said, this looks a lot like a configuration problem on my side, not a bug. I have had Tomcat v3.0 on my Macintosh running fine for weeks serving up servlets and JSP. I've installed Cocoon by copying all the .jar files necessary into the "tomcat_root/lib" directory and adding them all to the classpath. When I access: http://localhost:8080/example/Cocoon.xml I get back the correct status page with all the Cocoon information on it. But when I try and access: http://localhost:8080/example/hello/hello.xml, I get this error message: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /earthtrip/Internet/Tomcat v3.0/example/org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon Why am I getting a FileNotFoundException for the servlet? Isn't the org.apache.cocoon.Cocoon servlet already running and initialized if I can access Cocoon.xml? It says it's initialized in the console window. I may need to do an application server running in parallel if I can't guarantee certain behaviors. So, does a DCP Object remain in memory indefinitely? If so, are there any security issues involved in that? The observed behavior is that the DCP Object remains in memory as long as the server is running (or more specifically the Java Virtual Machine it is running within). I also need to know how to remove DCP Objects from memory, so that the server doesn't get overpowered with latent objects that I don't want anymore. I already know what to expect with Servlets. I am leaning toward an application server running in parallel, and either using DCP Objects to communicate with it, or servlets. I currently have a very complex web application (a real-time online travel reservation system) in development using the MVC methodology with servlets and JSP. While this works great from certain standpoints, stuffing beans with data and forwarding them to JSP's has quickly gotten very ugly and tedious to maintain. Massive JSP pages filled with if/then's is hard to figure out what's going on. I don't even have much code as the majority of logic is done by the beans, but you can't avoid the if/then's, etc when writing a JSP like this. Looking at Cocoon seems to be what I'd like to move to. BTW, what is the stability of this system - the web site seems to make it sound like it's only useable for proof of concept and shouldn't be used for deployment on any systems of reasonable traffic. Does it scale? Has it been tested with complex web applications? Anyway, my original question is how to use internationalization within dynamically generated pages. My current system uses ResourceBundle objects which are stored in the ServletContext which each page uses to display data by checking the browser default language settings. Is this something that can be done with Cocoon. As I said, I've only gotten Cocoon up and running yesterday afternoon so I don't know much about it's capabilities.
